Nico is an amazing teacher. Not only did she make Chinese lessons fun and interactive, she made sure I left each class with a full understanding of the material. Her lessons elevated my Chinese because I got to practice writing, listening, speaking, and conversations. I’ve taken Chinese in… other classes and through Youtube videos, but Nico’s teaching is truly the best and like no other. She cares about her students and their progress. Everyone who wants to learn Chinese needs to take classes from her. Read more “Nico is an amazing teacher.”

I began taking lessons from Nico when I was living in Taipei, preparing to go to China for a job opportunity. We met twice a week for a one on one class and it was a great experience. The lessons were well planned, understandable, and practical. Nico chose… the perfect method to help me learn both the simple phrases I might need abroad as well as introducing me to the complexities of the characters. Her passion was always obvious, and she was well prepared every class. But the most memorable thing was the she made learning a very difficult language enjoyable. I enjoyed every minute of it. I was inspired to do my homework and to be prepared for class. Upon reflection, I think the class was so enjoyable because she evidently loved teaching and her joy was infectious and made me feel relaxed.
I am very grateful to teacher Nico for helping me enjoy such a challenging learning process. Thanks! Read more “Always Enjoyable”

I’ve known Chén Lǎoshī since she taught me Chinese in Taiwan for one semester in early 2011 at the International Chinese Language Program at NTU. Yeah, I’ve been studying Chinese awhile, on and off since 1988 in fact. (And yes, it doesn’t go that far back but my… picture is a bit dated. 😏) So by this time I have had well over 20 Chinese teachers there and in the US, many of them great. I believe she is the best of all of them. She taught me in a solo class, associated with one of ICLP’s core classes, one of which students take every term. She was the only teacher there I ever had who on the first day of class asked her students to fill out a questionnaire, describing how long they had been studying the language, what their goals were, what they liked outside the classroom, etc. At the end of every term at ICLP all students are expected to write and memorize for presentation a speech of roughly five minutes on some topic the students select themselves. In the speech they are expected to break through to a higher level of oral Chinese by using concepts they have studied that term, and as needed new grammar and vocabulary. I did this three times, and only when she was the teacher did I do both the talk itself and the teacher Q&A portion flawlessly. When she was in college she did not even start out as someone who wanted to teach Chinese, but she decided to go back to school and learn what could be learned, and ever since has been incredibly dedicated. And I’m not the only one from my class at ICLP who talked this way. Everyone I knew who had her as a teacher felt this way. She recognizes that every student is different. She knows the technical details of effective Chinese-language teaching. She absolutely knocks herself out trying to make sure every student makes progress, and always knows the material backward and forward. She is a genuinely genial and kind teacher, very easy to get along with, and tries to make the learning process enjoyable. She’s got a terrific sense of humor. She’s taught both in classrooms and online. In addition to one-on-one teaching, she’s taught a lot in a small-group setting. And she keeps up with her students after they move on. She has generously helped me with several Chinese projects in the years since 2011. I am a college teacher (not of Chinese) myself. I have been doing it for 28 years. I have both regularly been evaluated by students and occasionally have had to evaluate younger teachers. As part of my job I also write lots of letters of recommendation for students who ask. So I am speaking the truth when I say that whether because of natural gifts or hard work (or both) I cannot say, but you will not regret learning with her. Read more “My experiences with 陳老師”
